Keep it Green
TRC do their part to "Keep it Green" and welcome all other transport operators to adopt the same idea!
Addressing climate change with environmental sustainability is now imperative to the Governments transport agenda. The New Zealand transport sector is highly dependant on fossil fuels which is unfortunately a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Recent European Union investigations reveal road transport emit an average of 123.1 grams of CO2 per tonne-kilometre with rail at 22.8 and coastal shipping 13.9. In October 2007 under the Sea Change Strategy the government announced a target of reducing per capita emissions from the transport sector by half before the year 2040.
TRC are part of the Road Transport Association (RTA) and as a collective the RTA are currently looking at carbon emissions in both metropolitan and long haul environments with current investigations into alternative bio fuels.
TRC have seen a dramatic increase with Coastal Containised Cargo under the Searoad Logistics brand. This has effectively taken weekly cargo from alternative less environmental modes being road and rail now on sea.
TRC have an in house "3 Minute Rule" as to conserve fuel and reduce emissions. Basically all vehicles idling for longer than three minutes are required to turn off the engines. This is relevant for all queues especially airline terminals and port terminals where vehicles can be waiting for hours. The GPS systems are monitored to police this requirement with reports sent on a weekly basis to divisional managers.
The GPS system is used to improve efficiencies of transport and ensure backloads of containers or loose cargo are utilised where possible. TRC also run a modern fleet and investigate any further initiative to improve energy efficiency and cleanliness.
